The 21st film in the MCU; Captain Marvel introduces us to yet another invincible superhero; Captain Marvel AKA Vers AKA Carol Danvers aka BRIE LARSON. The gorgeous little lady totally nails this role as Captain Marvel, rumoured to be the most powerful among them all. Half the things in all MCU films are awe inspiring and jaw dropping. This one is no different. It is awe inspiring and jaw dropping at the same time.
A couple of new species (not completely new) are introduced having the most astounding technology (not a surprise) as part of their physiology/biology. The SKRULLS, extra-terrestrial shape shifters of the SKRULLOS. And the KREE, noble warrior heroes, scientifically and technologically advanced humanoids of the HALA. And they have their fight. The land. The home. The works. Colonial dreams and survival. The universe is just an extended version of an advanced Earth where the big take the small and harbour Colonial dreams. Stan Lee is a genius to have extended the reality of our world to the galaxy.
Apart from the fact that the movie has impeccable CGI and unbelievable set pieces, what I really liked is the fact that it is also a very engaging and interesting origin story of Carol Danvers and how she transforms into the incredible Captain Mar-Vell(Watch the movie to know the connection). The story is so intense and convoluted that I’d rather not write about it.
Vers is a Kree warrior who is affected by emotions, and hence, vulnerable. This little detail forms the highlight of the movie along with an amazing camaraderie with the ever charming Samuel L Jackson (Who is young here, thanks to CGI. Also, he gets max screen time in this movie as compared to all other MCU movies). Vers herself is not aware of the power she possesses and what exactly she is capable of doing until pushed to the brink. What I loved most about her character and the way it is written is that she realises her truth and her past and her powers in sync with the audience. It all unfolds for her and the audience together. This makes the screenplay a little confusing at times and we are left playing catch up half the time. Eventually, the movie settles into a simple fight between good and evil. A fight between the SKRULL and KREE. A fight between CAPTAIN MARVEL and everything and everyone against her. This also is a nice origin movie of sorts for NICHOLAS JOSEPH FURY(SHIELD).
It tends to get confusing at times if you try and imagine the timeline of the Tesseract and all else in the movie along with all the other MCU’s but it all works out in the end and it’s almost POETIC. Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn are brilliant as always (Though Ben Mendelsohn shines on as SKRULL commander TALOS). The humour is subtle as is in all other Marvel flicks. Brie Larson nails this role as an 80’s-90’s grunge American girl and the setup is beautifully 80’s-90’s as well. You can’t help but love everything in the movie. This takes the anticipation level for Avengers Endgame to an all time high and fits perfectly in the ensemble.
Lastly, DO NOT MISS the mid-credits and post-credits scenes. IT will make Marvel fans almost emotional and totally give you goosebumps.
As always, this deserves an IMAX 3D watch. Go for it. Mar-Vell on.
